It happens almost overnight: the trees are all in their varying shades of green, and then one day they all tart up in their brilliant scarlets, neon oranges and Day-Glo yellows, dressing up in garish party clothes.

I do adore the fall colors. I miss the Great River Road near St Louis; the drive from Alton to Grafton was as if a giant painter had spilled an entire palate of vibrant colors across the bluffs.
