Finding Notes in Books From Previous Readers
First off, I must admit the photo and the idea are "borrowed" shamelessly from the lovely Katherine Ey's blog, "Forty Days of Small Moments of Happiness," which I encourage you to check out. But I whole-heartedly agree with this one. I love finding notes in the margins of books, or underlined passages, and trying to figure out what those meant to the previous readers. Sometimes an image will be underlined, with a "yes!" written next to it. Once, at the end of a chapter, I found the note, "Will I be brave enough?" (Not the character, but "I"...). You can almost use them as writing prompts, or little glimpses into another life.

ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I don't love pre-markings and notes in textbooks. I always worry: what if this guy got an "F" and I'm being influenced to focus on the wrong things?
I agree about textbooks, Jeanne! I hate opening a text book or novel and finding a bunch of highlighting. I don't like highlighting in general. It's those little notes I love.
